Tennengebirge, Mountain range in Salzburg Region, Austria
Tennengebirge is a limestone mountain range in the Salzburg Region with peaks reaching 2,430 meters. The range is crossed by numerous caves that extend deep into the mountains.
The mountain range received protection status in 1982 when 37 square kilometers above 2,000 meters were designated as a nature reserve. This action helped preserve the geological features of the area.
The mountains have long drawn people seeking connection with nature, particularly because of the extensive cave systems found throughout the region. Visitors today can feel the same pull that has attracted researchers and explorers to these slopes.
The area has several mountain huts including the Anton Proksch House at 1,590 meters that provide lodging and meals for hikers. These huts serve as good starting points for day trips or longer hikes.
The Eisriesenwelt cave system extends 42 kilometers through the mountains and is the world's longest ice cave system. This underground world is filled with ice formations that shift with the seasons.
