Mannheimer Hütte, Mountain hut in Rätikon range, Vorarlberg, Austria
The Mannheimer Hütte is a mountain hut on a ridge between the Panüler and Wildberg peaks in Vorarlberg's Rätikon range. It has sleeping spaces spread across several dormitory rooms, along with a separate winter room that remains accessible outside the main season.
The Mannheim section of the German Alpine Club built the hut in 1903, making it one of the first organized high-altitude shelters in the area. It has served climbers and hikers ever since, functioning as a base for those exploring the Rätikon peaks.
The hut is a natural meeting point for hikers crossing the Rätikon from different directions, and the shared dining room brings people together at the end of the day. Conversations over a warm meal often turn into plans for the next morning's route.
The hut is only reachable on foot, so proper hiking boots and weatherproof clothing are necessary before setting off. Payment is accepted in cash only, so it is worth sorting that out before leaving the valley.
The hut sits exactly on the border between Austria and Switzerland, meaning guests can stand in both countries at the same time. The border line is marked on the floor inside the building.
