Sonnschienhütte, Mountain hut in Tragöß, Austria
The Sonnschienhütte is a mountain hut located at about 1526 meters elevation in the Hochschwabgruppe region, providing lodging with roughly 47 sleeping places distributed across several dormitory rooms. The facility offers basic amenities for hikers and overnight guests.
The mountain hut was built in 1914 and has served as a shelter in the Hochschwabgruppe for a century. Major technical renovations in 2012 modernized the facilities and infrastructure significantly.
The resident managers prepare regional dishes such as Grammelstrudl soup and homemade pastries, maintaining traditional Austrian mountain cooking. These meals connect visitors to the culinary heritage of the area.
The hut is open during two seasons: May through September and October through March, with mandatory closure during the deer rutting season between September 15 and October 15. Visitors should plan their hiking trips around these seasonal windows.
The hut received the Energy Globe STYRIA AWARD in 2024 for operating an advanced hydrogen facility system at high altitude. This recognition highlights how traditional mountain lodges can adopt modern technologies to achieve sustainable operations.
