Ethnological Museum, Ethnographic museum in Agrabad, Chittagong, Bangladesh
The Ethnological Museum is a cultural institution in Chittagong that presents eleven galleries with artifacts, maps, photographs, and models representing more than twenty ethnic communities from Bangladesh. Each exhibition area focuses on a different group and displays their traditional objects, lifeways, and craft techniques.
The institution was founded in 1965 and opened to the public in 1974 after years of planning and preparation. Later additions in the 1980s and 1990s, along with a section dedicated to Bengali folk traditions, significantly expanded its scope.
The displays showcase tools and garments from hill communities that still play roles in local crafts and celebrations today. Visitors can observe how these objects connect to the daily practices and cultural identities of the groups represented.
The venue is easily reached via Sabdar Ali Road and attracts hundreds of visitors daily who can explore the galleries at their own pace. All exhibition areas feature descriptive plaques that provide background information about each group on display.
The museum displays silver ornaments and decorative pieces crafted by various communities using distinct metalworking traditions. These objects originate from different regions and showcase the diverse metallurgical techniques practiced across South Asia.
