Pont-canal du Sart, Navigable aqueduct in La Louvière, Belgium
Pont-canal du Sart is a navigable aqueduct that carries the Canal du Centre across the Thiriau du Sart valley while allowing road traffic to pass beneath it. The structure connects two sections of the waterway and lets boats travel without interruption through the region.
This aqueduct was built between 1998 and 2001 as part of modernizing the Canal du Centre to accommodate larger vessels. The project represented a major engineering challenge at a time when Belgium was updating its waterway system.
The structure represents a milestone in Belgian industrial engineering, connecting multiple economic centers through its water transportation capabilities.
You can view the aqueduct from different angles, both from the roads below and from boats on the canal. The best views come from ground level when vessels pass through, or from the water if you travel by boat.
The structure uses specially reinforced concrete with 28 circular pillars that support the water-filled channel as it spans across the valley. This engineering approach allowed builders to create a long and wide crossing without excessive weight.
