Le Rœulx Castle, Medieval castle residence in Le Rœulx, Belgium.
Le Rœulx Castle is a château in the town of Le Rœulx, in the Belgian province of Hainaut, with a classical main facade and large wings built during the 18th century. The building sits within a park and combines a medieval core with later additions that give it its current form.
The estate passed to the Croÿ family in 1429, when Jacqueline of Bavaria transferred it to Anthony of Croÿ. That change of ownership began a long period during which the family shaped the property through successive renovations.
The castle has long given Le Rœulx its identity, and locals still refer to the town in relation to its presence. Walking through the area, the building feels less like a monument and more like a living part of the town fabric.
Access to the castle building is restricted, so it is worth contacting the local administration before planning a visit. The park around it is more accessible and can be explored on foot.
Every June, the castle grounds host Belgium's largest hot air balloon festival, with dozens of balloons launching from the lawns. The event has no connection to the history of the building itself, yet it is what draws many visitors to Le Rœulx for the first time.
