Rachovets

Rachovets is a medieval fortress perched on the northern slopes of Arbanasi Plateau with commanding views from steep cliffsides. The site contains multiple sections with ancient walls, towers, and structures built and modified across several centuries.

The fortress was established in ancient times but became strategically important after the uprising of Asen and Peter in 1199. It served as a key component in the northern defensive network protecting the region from invasion.

The name comes from the Persian word 'rah', meaning road, reflecting its role as a checkpoint on ancient trade routes crossing the region. Visitors can sense how this location once regulated the movement of merchants and armies passing through.

The site is accessible from the nearby town but situated in hilly terrain with steep approaches to various sections. Sturdy footwear and adequate time are recommended, especially if exploring all areas of the fortification.

Excavations from 1985 to 1991 revealed the fortress was built in multiple phases, with final modifications dating to the 13th and 14th centuries. These layers show how the structure evolved to meet changing military needs over time.
