Nativity of Mary Church, Orthodox cathedral in Bolyarska district, Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria.
The Nativity of Mary Church is an Orthodox church building in Veliko Tarnovo's Bolyarska district featuring three narthex spaces and marble tile floors throughout. A stone bell tower stands approximately 30 meters west of the main structure.
The original church was built between 1842 and 1844 by master builder Kolyo Ficheto. After an earthquake destroyed it in 1913, the structure was reconstructed.
Inside, frescoes from 1954 depict pivotal moments of Bulgarian history, including the baptism of the Bulgarian people and the literary School of Teodosie. These painted scenes hold deep meaning for the local community and remain central to how people experience the place.
The church welcomes visitors throughout the year and maintains a regular schedule of religious services. Appropriate dress and respectful behavior are expected when entering.
Russian bells hanging in the church bear inscriptions commemorating the crossing of the Danube by Russian liberation forces in the 19th century. These bells connect the building's story to a broader chapter of regional history.
