Church of St Demetrius of Thessaloniki, Veliko Tarnovo

The Church of St Demetrius is an Eastern Orthodox building in Veliko Tarnovo featuring a pentahedral apse, cross-domed roof, and blind arches on its exterior. Its walls display glazed rosettes, suns, rhombs, and painted figures as decorative elements.

The original building was constructed in 1185 at the location where nobles Asen and Peter declared their uprising against Byzantine rule. This revolt led to the establishment of the Second Bulgarian Empire and reshaped the region's political landscape.

The church is named after Saint Demetrius and features painted figures on its exterior walls that reflect religious devotion of the medieval period. This decoration shows how local craftsmen expressed spiritual traditions through their work.

The church sits on Tsar Ivan Shishman Street near Trapezitsa Fortress and other historic sites in the old town. Walking through the area is the best way to visit, as narrow lanes and steep paths characterize this part of the city.

The building seen today resulted from an eight-year reconstruction completed in 1985 based on archaeological remains. Craftspeople studied other church examples to recreate what the original structure likely looked like.
