Church of St Demetrius of Thessaloniki, Veliko Tarnovo

The church features a pentahedral apse and cross-domed design with blind arches, glazed rosettes, suns, rhombs, and painted figures on its exterior walls.

The original building, constructed in 1185, served as the location where nobles Asen and Peter declared their uprising against Byzantine rule to establish the Second Bulgarian Empire.

The preserved frescoes within the church walls represent two distinct periods: one from its initial construction and another from the fourteenth century.

The church building stands at Tsar Ivan Shishman 8 street, near Trapezitsa Fortress, Holy Forty Martyrs Church, and Tsarevets Fortress in Veliko Tarnovo.

The current structure results from an eight-year reconstruction project completed in 1985, based on architectural remains and examples from other Bulgarian churches.
