Church of the Dormition, Pazardzhik, Eastern Orthodox church in Pazardzhik, Bulgaria.
The Church of the Dormition is an Eastern Orthodox house of worship in Pazardzhik built with brick and showcasing Revival-period architecture from Bulgaria. The structure spans approximately 38 meters in length and 23 meters in width, creating a spacious interior that holds carved wooden religious furnishings and painted surfaces.
This house of worship was built in 1836 after earlier structures had been destroyed and the community needed a new place for prayer. Major additions and reconstructions took place between 1906 and 1933, substantially changing how the building appeared.
The wooden carvings of the iconostasis and interior frescoes reflect craft techniques from Bulgaria's period of cultural revival during Ottoman rule. You can observe how local artisans applied their skills to religious decoration and spiritual expression.
The site welcomes visitors during regular hours and remains active as a place of worship for the local Orthodox community. Please dress respectfully when visiting, as this is a working religious space where services and prayers occur.
The bell tower was constructed in separate phases across two decades, with master builders Petar Kazov, Dimitar Kazov, and Kuzman Michov each leaving their mark on its design. This step-by-step development reflects how local craftspeople passed knowledge across generations.
