Tell Yunatsite, Archaeological excavation site near Pazardzhik, Bulgaria
Tell Yunatsite is a large earthen mound near Pazardzhik that formed through thousands of years of human settlement and accumulation. Its layers contain remains from prehistoric times through the Medieval period, revealing how communities lived one after another on the same location.
The mound began forming around 6000 BCE when early people settled there and successive generations built new settlements on top of older ruins. This layering records the development of the region across several thousand years of human habitation.
The mound reflects multiple societies that occupied and shaped the land across different time periods. Today, visitors can join archaeological teams during field seasons to understand how experts uncover and interpret these layered histories.
The site is generally open to visitors, but it's worth checking in advance since active excavation work may affect access. Wear sturdy shoes and bring sun protection, as the exposed mound offers little shade.
Among the most striking finds here is a prehistoric golden bead that reveals how early people possessed metalworking skills. Such ancient metalwork helps researchers understand when and how communities first began working with precious metals.
