Coves del Drach, Show cave in Porto Cristo, Spain
Coves del Drach is a cave system in Porto Cristo on Mallorca with four large underground chambers connected by passages throughout the network. The limestone formations grow downward from the ceilings and rise upward from the floors and form columns where both shapes meet.
Scientists explored the caves in the late 19th century and mapped the underground lakes and passages for geological studies. In 1922 the caves opened for regular visits and lighting was installed to make the formations visible to guests.
Musicians row across the lake in boats and play classical music while visitors sit or stand along the shore and listen to the performance. After the concert ends guests can take a short boat ride across the illuminated water themselves and see the cave from a different perspective.
The temperature inside stays around 21 degrees Celsius (70 degrees Fahrenheit) throughout the year and humidity levels remain high. Guided tours run from morning until afternoon in several languages and last about an hour with walkways leading through all chambers.
The underground Lago Martel extends for about 177 meters (580 feet) in length and ranks among the largest underground lakes in Europe. The water mirrors the illuminated rock formations and doubles the visual effect of the cave ceiling for visitors walking along the shore.
