Puig de Massanella, Mountain summit in Escorca, Spain.
Puig de Massanella is a mountain summit within the Serra de Tramuntana, rising to 1,364 meters and forming the second highest elevation on the island of Mallorca. The terrain features mixed conditions with varying slopes that accommodate different hiking approaches.
The summit was intensively used by local people in past centuries, who utilized limestone formations and rock cavities for snow storage and preservation during Mediterranean summers. These ancient storage pits reveal how residents harnessed the mountain's resources for their daily needs.
Local residents have established various hiking paths to reach the peak, marked with red dots and stone cairns to guide hikers through different levels of difficulty.
The standard route begins at Lluc monastery and covers approximately 15.5 kilometers with an elevation gain of about 840 meters over changing terrain. Hikers should prepare for mixed conditions and bring sturdy footwear plus adequate water.
Unlike the higher Puig Major, this summit remains openly accessible because its neighboring mountain is restricted for military purposes. This distinction makes it Mallorca's highest point that the public can freely reach.
