Puig de Massanella, Mountain summit in Escorca, Spain.
Puig de Massanella is a mountain summit in the Serra de Tramuntana range, in the municipality of Escorca, Mallorca, and stands as the second highest point on the island at 1,364 meters. The upper terrain is mostly limestone rock and open slopes, reached by trails that vary in gradient and surface.
The Serra de Tramuntana, where this peak sits, has been shaped by centuries of farming and grazing, with communities in the surrounding valleys making use of the high ground for resources. Over time, the mountain range became protected land, and today it holds UNESCO World Heritage status for its historic landscape.
Hikers across the island regard this peak as the highest point they can freely reach on Mallorca, which gives it a special place among those who walk the mountains. Along the trail, stone cairns and red dot markings left by generations of walkers help guide the way up.
The most used route starts near Lluc monastery and crosses varied ground with rocky sections, so sturdy footwear and enough water are essential. The trail is long and demanding, so starting early in the morning is a good idea, especially in warmer months.
Near the summit, old stone-lined pits are still visible where snow collected in winter was packed and stored to be sold as ice during the summer months. This trade was once a practical source of income for the people living in the mountain villages below.
