Puig Major

Puig Major is the highest mountain in the Balearic Islands, rising 1436 meters above sea level. It sits at the heart of the Sierra de Tramuntana range, where hikers can access several pathways and viewpoints throughout the peaks and valleys.

A Spanish Air Force radar station was built on the summit during the twentieth century, restricting public access to the peak for many years. This military installation shaped how the mountain was perceived and used by the local population.

The mountain sits within the Sierra de Tramuntana, a region recognized by UNESCO for its traditional rural landscapes and historic settlements that have changed little over time. Walking through nearby villages, you notice how people have shaped the land with terraces and stone walls that define the entire region.

You can view the mountain best from the Cuber Reservoir area, where several hiking paths of varying difficulty begin nearby. The cooler months offer the most stable weather for spending time on the trails.

The mountain sits above an extensive reservoir system that has supplied drinking water to Palma and surrounding towns since 1971. This hidden water infrastructure plays a key role in the region, though visitors rarely notice the reservoirs while hiking.
