Gorg Blau

Gorg Blau is an artificial reservoir located between Puig Major and Puig de Massanella in the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, serving as a vital water storage facility for Palma and surrounding communities on the island of Mallorca.

The reservoir was created in 1971 through flooding a former gorge that had been used for hydroelectric power since 1906, when a dam was first constructed on a tributary of the Torrent de Pareis, fundamentally altering the landscape and infrastructure of the area.

Before becoming a reservoir, the site inspired numerous artists and poets, including Miquel Costa i Llobera who wrote the poem 'El Gorg Blau' and painter Joaquim Mir who created a stained glass triptych celebrating its natural beauty in 1911.

The reservoir is accessible via the Ma-10 road that runs along its western side, with parking areas and marked trails allowing visitors to explore the surrounding Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located near the town of Palma.

In 2003, the Balearic Islands Government declared Gorg Blau a natural monument, recognizing its environmental and geological importance while protecting it from industrial development and preserving its role as both a functional reservoir and a site of natural heritage.
