Magaluf, Coastal resort town in Calvià, Spain
Magaluf is a resort town on the western coast of Mallorca with a wide sandy beach and clear, shallow water. The promenade runs along the bay and leads to a range of shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues that line both sides of the main boulevard.
The town developed from a small coastal settlement into a tourism center during the 1960s. This shift led to the development of the beach and the construction of hotels along the bay, which fundamentally changed local life.
The name derives from an Arabic term referring to a place with abundant vegetation, describing the original landscape. Today, the municipality preserves its Mallorcan identity through a series of folk festivals and sporting events held throughout the year.
Most hotels and shops close between November and April, while the summer high season offers a full range of services. The beach is easily accessible and the promenade is well suited for a walk along the coast.
A swim of around 400 meters (1,300 feet) leads to Isla de sa Porrassa, also called Black Lizard Island because of its numerous dark lizards. The island's rocks offer a quiet retreat away from the beach, where the reptiles bask among the stones.
