Salburua, Protected wetland in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain.
Salburua is a wetland on the eastern edge of Vitoria-Gasteiz, made up of lakes, meadows, and oak woods. The area sits between the city and the open countryside, forming a natural transition between the two.
In the 19th century, the wetlands were drained and turned into farmland until restoration work began in 1994. In 2002, the site was recognized as a Ramsar wetland of international importance.
Salburua forms part of the Green Belt of Vitoria-Gasteiz, a network of green spaces that rings the city and is used by locals for daily walks. At the lakeshores, visitors can watch birds from close range without any special equipment.
The site has walking and cycling paths, as well as observation points accessible to people with different mobility needs. The Ataria visitor centre provides information about the area and is a good starting point for exploring it.
The European mink, one of the rarest mammals on the continent, lives here and is found nowhere else in this region. Its presence is seen as a sign that the ecosystem has recovered after restoration.
