Salburua, Protected wetland in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain.
Salburua is a wetland covering roughly 160 hectares on the eastern edge of Vitoria-Gasteiz that includes lakes, meadows, and oak woods. It works as a natural system for managing water and preventing floods in the city.
The wetlands were converted to farmland during the 19th century until restoration work started in 1994. The area received Ramsar site protection status in 2002.
The Ataria interpretation centre shows how local communities engage with nature through education and observation. Visitors experience the wetland as a place for learning about water ecosystems and wildlife directly.
The site offers walking paths, cycling routes, and observation points suitable for different abilities. Guided tours and detailed information are available at the Ataria centre.
The wetland is an important refuge for the European mink, an endangered species found nowhere else in the region. This small predator is considered a key indicator of ecosystem health.
