Mediterranean Motorway, Toll motorway on Mediterranean coast, Spain.
The Autopista del Mediterráneo is a toll motorway running along Spain's Mediterranean coast, crossing ten provinces from Girona to Cádiz. It includes multiple sections managed by different operators and offers several lanes in each direction with regular service areas and toll plazas.
Construction began in the 1960s as part of a nationwide plan to modernize Spanish transport routes during the economic development period. Different sections were expanded over the following decades to handle growing traffic between coastal cities.
The route links Catalan, Valencian, and Andalusian territories, where travelers notice different dialects, food traditions, and urban layouts at each stop. Landscapes shift along the way, from vineyards and olive groves in the north to dry plains and palm gardens in the south.
Toll plazas accept electronic payment, cash, and credit cards, with fees ranging from roughly 5 to 30 euros depending on vehicle type. Service areas offer fuel stations, restaurants, and restrooms at regular intervals along the entire route.
The route forms part of European route E15, which stretches from Algeciras in southern Spain to Inverness in Scotland. This connection integrates the Spanish east coast into a continental road network crossing multiple countries.
