Necròpolis de Son Real, Archaeological necropolis in Santa Margalida, Spain
Son Real is an ancient burial ground located along the Mediterranean coast with approximately 110 tomb structures of varying forms. These monuments feature rectangular, square, circular, and apsidal shapes scattered across the landscape.
The site was founded during the Talayotic period around the 7th century BC and remained in use until the 1st century BC. Over this long span, it reflects changing burial practices and the evolution of tomb design.
The burial structures display different forms that reflect how people honored their dead in antiquity. Visitors can observe how much care went into these burials, with pottery and jewelry indicating the social standing of those laid to rest.
The site is reached via a coastal path from Son Real estate, taking approximately twenty minutes on foot. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water, as the route crosses uneven ground with little shade.
Excavations uncovered remains of approximately 300 individuals with personal belongings that reveal details about daily life in ancient times. Discoveries also suggest that communal feasts were held at the graves during burial ceremonies.
