Residencia de Estudiantes, Cultural center and student residence in Altos del Hipódromo, Madrid, Spain
The Residencia de Estudiantes is a student residence and cultural center in the Altos del Hipódromo neighborhood of Madrid, Spain. The complex consists of several brick buildings with arched windows, courtyards, lecture halls, and gardens that accommodate students, researchers, and visitors.
The institution opened in 1910 as a project of the Junta para Ampliación de Estudios to give Spanish students access to modern teaching methods and international thinkers. The Civil War ended this first phase in 1939, and the site was later used for other purposes until it reopened as a cultural center in the 1980s.
Federico García Lorca, Luis Buñuel, and Salvador Dalí formed strong connections at this residence, which hosted lectures by international intellectuals between wars.
Visitors can attend public events, exhibitions, and lectures held throughout the year, while the residential areas remain reserved for resident researchers. The gardens and some common rooms are accessible during event hours, and it is advisable to check the program in advance.
After receiving the European Heritage Label in 2014, the center maintains its dual function as both an educational residence and a platform for cultural exchange.
