Church of Espíritu Santo, Madrid, Religious building in El Viso district, Madrid, Spain.
Church of Espíritu Santo is a church building in El Viso district and features a central dome positioned above the presbytery. The design draws from Mozarabic sacred architecture and has no transepts.
The building started as an auditorium in 1931 and was converted into a church between 1942 and 1946 under architect Miguel Fisac. This transformation reflects changes in Madrid after the civil war.
Frescos inside show craftsmanship from the mid-20th century restoration period. The painted walls complement the religious character that the space now conveys today.
The building is open for visits daily with regular worship services at different times throughout the day. Its central location in the El Viso neighborhood makes it easy to find and walk to.
The original cloister from the auditorium design by architect Arniches was preserved but now belongs to the adjacent Miguel Antonio Catalán Physics Center. This architectural remnant connects two different uses of the same complex.
