Puerta del Puente

The Puerta del Puente is a Renaissance-style city gate at the northern end of Córdoba's Roman Bridge, featuring classical Doric columns and a traditional stone structure. The building is open to visitors and offers views over the bridge and surrounding areas.

The gate underwent a complete reconstruction in the late 16th century to welcome King Felipe II and replaced its earlier Roman and Islamic architecture. This transformation marked a turning point in how the city wanted to present itself.

The gate served as a symbolic entrance to the city and was a gathering point for people crossing the bridge in daily life. Its grand design conveyed the city's power and order to all who passed through.

The building includes an exhibition room with engravings and drawings about the gate's history that visitors can view. A viewpoint accessible from above offers views of the bridge, making it good for photography and taking in the surroundings.

The gate features Latin inscriptions carved into its stone structure that commemorate King Felipe II's visit in 1570. These inscriptions document an important moment in the city's past and reward close observation.
