Xàbia

Xàbia is a coastal municipality in Marina Alta within the province of Alicante and covers three different centers ranging from the old town core through the port to the beach area. The Montgó rises behind the residential neighborhoods and forms a natural boundary to the inland.

The settlement developed from the Middle Ages around a fortified church that served as protection against pirate raids. Fishing and raisin export shaped the economy until the 20th century.

The name comes from an Arabic term for this coastal region and remains visible in the narrow lanes of the old center. Residents gather on warm evenings in small squares where taverns serve local rice dishes.

Access is through Alicante or Valencia airports with subsequent bus connections along the coast. The three parts of town lie several kilometers apart and can be connected by local buses or on foot with longer walks.

An old watchtower at the southern tip of the municipality stands on a rocky outcrop above the sea and once served to warn of approaching ships. Fishermen used the area around the tower to dry their nets directly over the rocks.
