Monasterio de Santa María de Villanueva de Oscos

The monastery complex includes both the main building and an adjacent church, featuring Romanesque architectural elements at the head of the temple.

Founded in 1137 by Alfonso VII of León and Castilla, the monastery joined the Cistercian Order in 1203 through a papal bull from Innocent III.

The monastery preserves 616 medieval parchments, including 32 from the 12th century, 261 from the 13th century, and 224 from the 14th century.

The church section of the monastery maintains its function as a parish church and remains the best preserved part of the complex.

The geographical position at 43.311806 latitude and -6.985806 longitude places it in the westernmost part of Asturias, near the Galician border.
