Conjunto Histórico de Teixois, Traditional water mills complex in Taramundi, Spain.
The Conjunto Histórico de Teixois is a mill complex with five different water-powered machines built along Mestas stream. These include a hammer mill for forging metal, a sharpening wheel, a grain mill, a fulling mill for cloth, and a small hydroelectric generator.
The mills developed between the 18th and 19th centuries when residents began using the stream's water power for production. This system allowed the village to manufacture tools, process materials, and create household goods independently.
The mills show how the village community worked together and shared resources for common production needs. Each family had a role in this shared system, which strengthened social bonds within the settlement.
The complex is located about 4 kilometers from Taramundi town center and is somewhat remote, so wear sturdy shoes and bring weather-appropriate clothing. Visit during dry periods when the paths are easier to walk and all the buildings are fully visible and accessible.
A small hydroelectric station built in 1936 generated power for the entire village and shows how innovative residents were. This independent system made the settlement a pioneer in renewable energy generation for rural areas.
