The Estuary of Bilbao extends 16 kilometers through the Biscay region, connecting multiple rivers including the Nervion, Ibaizabal, and Cadagua to the Cantabrian Sea.
The establishment of Bilbao as a trading settlement occurred 700 years ago along the Nervion River banks, with subsequent expansion following the waterway to the sea.
The waterway divides the metropolitan area into distinct banks, with Barakaldo and Portugalete on the left side, while Erandio and Getxo occupy the right bank.
The Port Authority has transferred maritime operations from the upper reaches to coastal locations at Santurtzi and Zierbena, enabling urban development along the former port areas.
The Integration Plan for the Recovery of the Ría de Bilbao transforms previous industrial zones into renewed spaces while maintaining navigation capabilities throughout the waterway.
