Aizkorri-Aratz Natural Park, Natural park in Basque Country, Spain.
Aizkorri-Aratz is a protected area near Oñati that spans two provinces, Gipuzkoa and Álava, with mountain ranges and peaks rising above 1500 meters. The park contains pastures, woodlands, and rocky summits spread across its territory.
The San Adrián tunnel connects the two provinces and contains remains from the Bronze Age, including stone-paved paths. Pilgrims traveling to Santiago later used these same paths for their journey.
Shepherds maintain their traditional way of life in the Campas de Urbía valley, where their simple huts dot the pastures. This daily pastoral practice shapes how the land is used and gives the area its distinctive rural character.
Hiking trails start from the Sanctuary of Arantzazu or Zalduendo village and lead through different sections of the area. Wear proper hiking boots and prepare for changing weather, especially at higher elevations.
The eastern section has limestone formations with underground sinkholes and caves holding prehistoric remains scattered throughout. The La Lece sinkhole is particularly deep and contains important findings from ancient times.
