Monterrey Castle

Monterrey Castle sits on a hilltop outside Verín, built with three defensive wall rings, a Ladies Tower, and a Keep as its main structures. The complex once housed a pilgrims' hospital and various religious and residential buildings within its fortified walls.

The castle began in the 12th century during conflicts with Portugal and underwent several expansions over time. The Keep was built in 1482 by Sancho Sánchez de Ulloa, marking a major phase of reinforcement for the fortress.

The fortress displays Gothic and Romanesque architectural styles that reflect centuries of occupation and development. Visitors can observe the carefully crafted doorways and stone details that reveal the layers of different periods.

The castle sits about 4 kilometers from the town center and is reached by a short walk uphill from the parking area. The site is open to visitors today and functions as a hotel, so be aware of designated access areas during your visit.

Within the fortress walls lie remnants of an abandoned 19th-century settlement. These hidden structures reveal how the site was continuously inhabited across many centuries before eventually being left behind.
