Vegueta

Vegueta is a historic district in Las Palmas with medieval streets and buildings from different eras featuring stone walls and wooden balconies with Gothic and neoclassical design elements. The layout follows a 15th-century urban plan with narrow passages and sloped terrain that preserve the original settlement pattern.

The settlement was founded in 1478 as the first urban center of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and quickly became a major port for Spanish maritime trade. The strategic location made this district the core of regional commerce and governance.

The Plaza de Santa Ana serves as the main meeting place where locals and visitors gather, with the Cathedral facing government buildings from various periods. The square shows how the neighborhood remains a center of community life today.

The district is easy to explore on foot, with multiple bus stops bringing visitors into the area and guided group tours starting from historic buildings. The hilly terrain and narrow passages require comfortable shoes and take time to navigate.

The Casa Museo Perez Galdos holds personal items and manuscripts belonging to Spanish writer Benito Perez Galdos, who was born in this neighborhood. The house preserves the daily life of a major 19th-century author and reveals how he lived here.
