Iglesia de San Nicolás

The Iglesia de San Nicolás is a baroque church with stone walls whose north façade blends Romanesque and Gothic architectural elements. The structure displays a rectangular form with a notable entrance portal that reveals layers of different architectural periods.

The structure was founded on January 17, 1201 as a Franciscan monastery positioned outside the fortified walls of medieval Avilés. Over centuries it evolved from a monastic community into a major parish church serving the expanding city.

The church serves as a gathering place in the historic quarter where locals still come for services and celebrations. Its dedication to Saint Nicholas reflects a patron saint with particular meaning in this region.

The church sits on Plaza de Domingo Álvarez Acebal in the pedestrian-friendly historic quarter and is easily reached on foot. A secondary entrance with a ramp provides wheelchair access for visitors with mobility needs.

Inside the church sits a rare Roman baptismal font carved from an alabaster Corinthian capital. This ancient artifact reveals how religious practice at the site reaches back to the Roman period.
