Palacio de Valdecarzana, Avilés

The Palacio de Valdecarzana is a Gothic palace in Avilés featuring distinctive twin windows on its first floor and stone corbels that support wooden beams across the main facade. The structure combines residential and commercial spaces within a unified medieval design.

The palace was built between the late 13th and early 14th centuries as a residence and commercial space for a merchant family. Its construction coincided with a period when Avilés was growing as a trading port.

The palace now serves as the Municipal Archive, housing historical documents and hosting exhibitions that reflect the city's past. Visitors can see how the building continues to play an active role in preserving local memory.

The palace sits at the corner of Calle de la Ferrería and Calle del Sol, making it easy to locate in the city center. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes as the medieval interior features uneven floors and narrow stairs.

The building stands as the oldest civil structure in Asturias and represents the only example of non-religious Gothic architecture in Avilés. This rarity makes it a precious record of secular medieval building in the region.
