Necropolis of Mount Areo, Archaeological site in Carreño, Spain
Mount Areo Necropolis is an archaeological site with over 30 burial mounds spread across two sections: Los Llanos and Les Huelgues de San Pablo. The mounds feature different structures built from alternating earth and stone layers, including rectangular chambers, a trapezoidal dolmen, and a corridor passage.
The site dates back to 3000 BC and represents one of the earliest known burial practices in the Asturian region. Archaeological surveys from the 1990s identified the different chamber types and their arrangement across the landscape.
The mounds show how ancient communities honored their dead and the importance these burial grounds held for their societies. Walking through the site, you can sense how much these places mattered to the people who built them.
The site is reached from Gijón by taking the AS-19 toward Avilés to Aboño, then following the CE-6 toward El Valle. Plan your visit for a clear day, as the mounds sit in open countryside with little shelter or shade.
The corridor chamber is an uncommon building form in the Cantabrian region, revealing how early cultures developed distinct burial traditions. This unusual design stands out from the more typical dome-shaped mounds found at other sites.
