Villa Romana de Veranes, Roman villa archaeological site in Gijón, Spain
Villa Romana de Veranes is a Roman settlement in the hills near Gijón with residential structures and work areas arranged on several terraces. The site sits at about 150 meters above sea level and includes a museum displaying finds from excavations, including a large mosaic with geometric patterns.
The settlement began in the early centuries after Christ and was inhabited for many generations. In the fifth century the site was abandoned, after which a church was built there with burial grounds.
The site displays everyday Roman objects such as ceramics and tools that show how people here worked and lived. These items offer insight into the daily routines of those who inhabited this settlement centuries ago.
The site is easy to reach on foot and offers views of the surrounding landscape from its elevated position. An on-site museum shows videos and displays that help explain the finds and layout of the ancient settlement.
This is the only extensively studied Roman site along Spain's entire northern coast, making it especially valuable for understanding this remote region. The excavations show that Roman civilization extended into this mountainous area.
