The Mercado del Sur features a pentagonal layout with cast iron columns and large ornamented windows across its metal structure perimeter.
The market opened in 1889 after the Gijón City Council authorized its construction and formed a society to manage the 2,700-square-meter commercial space.
Each day, merchants display fresh meat, fish, vegetables, and dairy products, maintaining a tradition of local commerce spanning over 130 years.
The market building underwent complete renovation in the late 1990s and reopened in 2001, currently housing 32 operating businesses within its premises.
The Fábrica de Mieres manufactured the metal framework under engineer Buenaventura Junquera's supervision, incorporating elements from different architectural styles.
