Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Begoña, Catholic church in Gijón, Spain
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Begoña is a brick church with colored glass windows located where Begoña promenade and Costa avenue meet. Its structure shows modern design with functional forms and interior spaces arranged to accommodate worshippers and visitors.
The original chapel stood on elevated ground but was destroyed during the Independence War, after which military structures occupied the site. The present building was later constructed as a new structure on this same location.
The devotion to the Virgin of Begoña shapes how people relate to this space, creating an atmosphere of spiritual reverence felt by visitors throughout the building. Local families continue traditions tied to this particular saint, visible in how they use and approach the church.
The church is open for visits, but regular services take place throughout the week and the space is used for prayer and worship. It helps to check when services occur and be respectful of any ongoing religious activities when you arrive.
The building was designed by Miguel Díaz Negrete in 1978 with intentionally minimal decoration, making it architecturally spare and straightforward. A representation of the Virgin of Begoña serves as one of the few visual focal points in this deliberately restrained design.
