Ensanche de Gijón, Urban expansion district in Gijón, Spain
Ensanche de Gijón is an urban neighborhood in the eastern part of the city center laid out with straight streets and tree-lined avenues extending from Calle Uría as the main axis. The district connects the central zone to San Lorenzo beach through a perpendicular street network.
The neighborhood originated from an 1867 urban development plan that converted 40 hectares of San Lorenzo beach sandbanks into a structured residential settlement. Engineer Francisco García de los Ríos designed this planned city expansion.
The neighborhood developed as a residential area with intentionally designed green spaces where locals built their daily lives. The presence of theaters and entertainment venues shows how residents spent their leisure time outside their homes.
The neighborhood is easy to explore on foot thanks to its perpendicular street layout that aids navigation. Access to both the beach and the city center is straightforward through the established street network.
At the heart of the neighborhood sits an elliptical plaza from which eight streets radiate outward, creating a distinctive geometric pattern in the urban design. This radial arrangement stands out from the otherwise perpendicular street layout.
