Nicanor Piñole Museum, Art museum in central Gijón, Spain
The Nicanor Piñole Museum displays over 700 paintings and around 6000 drawings spread across nine exhibition halls on three floors. The layout allows visitors to move through different works at a comfortable pace from the ground floor upward.
The museum opened in 1991 after Nicanor Piñole's widow donated his complete art collection to the city of Gijón. This generous gift formed the foundation for the institution and its mission to preserve the artist's work.
The collection shows portraits, landscapes and sketches that reflect how people lived in Asturias during the early 20th century. These works give you a sense of daily life, clothing and the look of the region during that time.
Admission is free and the galleries are easy to navigate for visitors who want to take their time. Audio guides are available in multiple languages to help you learn more about the works on display.
The museum holds the largest collection of works by Nicanor Piñole, including a 1923 portrait of Melquiades Alvarez created for the Congress of Deputies. This particular work offers a rare chance to see a historical portrait from that era up close.
