Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Contrueces

The Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Contrueces is a religious sanctuary in Gijón featuring a single nave with a prominent dome. Fortress-like walls enclose the entire complex, creating a fortified appearance characteristic of its architectural period.

An early church existed at this location during the medieval period, but the current Herrerian structure was built during the 17th century. Construction between 1638 and 1660 represents a major rebuilding that shaped the sanctuary into its present form.

The sanctuary draws many visitors during the feast of the Assumption, when traditional ceremonies bring local communities together to honor the Virgin.

The sanctuary is open to visitors throughout the year, and parking is available within walking distance of the main entrance. The site is situated on slightly sloped terrain, so comfortable footwear is advisable.

A revered image of the Virgin mysteriously disappeared for two weeks in 1970 and was later returned anonymously. This unusual incident remains one of the most puzzling episodes in the sanctuary's history.
