Construction of the church began between 1540 and 1565 under Bishop Bernando Manrique's direction and reached completion in 1631, costing 45,876 reales.
The interior walls display eight recovered frescoes from 1632 depicting apostles, discovered during renovations and representing religious artistry of the period.
The church stands in the upper section of Mijas, near the Plaza de Toros and Municipal Auditorium, making it accessible for visitors.
The bell tower originated as Torre de la Vela, constructed after 1544 as a defensive structure against pirate incursions along the coast.
