Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción

The iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción is a church in Mijas featuring three naves separated by rounded arches supported on marble columns. A robust bell tower crowns the structure and anchors its appearance.

Construction started between 1540 and 1565 under Bishop Bernardo Manrique and was completed in 1631. The project took decades to finish, reflecting the resources needed for such an undertaking.

The interior walls display eight recovered frescoes from the 1600s showing apostles, discovered during restoration work. These paintings show how religious art was created during that era.

The church is located in the upper section of Mijas, close to the Plaza de Toros and Municipal Auditorium, making it straightforward to find. This positioning makes a visit convenient when exploring the old town area.

The bell tower originated from Torre de la Vela, built after 1544 as a defensive structure against pirate attacks along the coast. This shows how religious buildings sometimes served protective purposes beyond their spiritual role.
