Castle of Despeñaperros

The Castle of Despeñaperros is a fortification in Cartagena built with two distinct perimeters, where the lower section housed living spaces and a water storage system for its residents. The upper level was designed with defensive positions to monitor and protect the surrounding coast.

This fortress was built in the 11th century as part of Cartagena's coastal defenses against maritime threats. It received protected heritage status in 1997 and has been listed on Spain's Red List of Endangered Heritage since 2014 due to deterioration.

The castle stands as a representation of medieval military architecture, featuring masonry walls and strategic positions for artillery placement within its upper section.
