Plaza del Príncipe, Central square in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain.
Plaza del Príncipe is a central square in Santa Cruz de Tenerife surrounded by thick-trunked laurel trees and ornamental statues from Genoa representing Spring and Summer. The space feels like a green island in the middle of the city, with benches for sitting and shaded areas beneath the trees.
The square originated from a Franciscan garden and was designed by architect Manuel de Oraá y Arcocha in 1857, then opened to the public in 1860. This transformation from religious grounds to a public space reflected the growing development of Santa Cruz at that time.
The plaza displays a bronze sculpture group titled Courage, created by Hanneke Beaumont in 1995, showing four human figures in thoughtful poses that invite visitors to pause and reflect.
The square connects to main city streets like Villalba Hervás, Valentín Sanz, Ruiz de Padrón, and José Murphy from different directions. You can access the plaza easily from various parts of the city and use it as a starting point for exploring nearby areas.
Several of the sturdy laurel trees in the square were originally imported from Cuba and planted during the opening celebration. These trees connect the plaza to a time when Tenerife had strong commercial ties to the Caribbean.
