Castle of Monzón de Campos, Medieval castle in Monzón de Campos, Palencia, Spain.
The Castle of Monzón de Campos stands on a hilltop overlooking the surrounding countryside, featuring a square keep measuring approximately 13 meters per side built with quality ashlar stone and numerous arrow slits distributed across all four faces.
Built in the 11th century, this castle served as the political center of the County of Monzón and witnessed the marriage of Queen Urraca of León to Alfonso the Battler of Aragon in 1109, with Pedro Ansúrez serving as its castellan.
Declared a Cultural Heritage Site in 1949, the castle preserves a Romanesque portal from the 13th century originally from the church of Cenera de Zalima, now submerged beneath the Aguilar de Campoo reservoir.
The castle underwent comprehensive restoration from 2001 to 2023 to make its interiors accessible and is currently managed by the Provincial Council of Palencia, though it remains closed to the public.
The fortress contains architectural elements from a submerged village and features the coat of arms of the Rojas family on its facade, representing its role as a strategic frontier bastion during the Reconquista.
