Palencia Cathedral, Gothic cathedral in Palencia, Spain
Palencia Cathedral is a Gothic religious building in Palencia rising at the main square of the town. It contains a nave with three aisles, a wide choir with an ambulatory and a series of chapels along the outer walls.
Work on the building began in 1172 atop a Visigothic crypt from the 7th century. Construction lasted more than three centuries and finished at the beginning of the 16th century.
The building takes its name from Saint Antoninus, a martyr whose relics rest within its walls and are celebrated each September by local communities. In the western transept, a chapel holds a painted altarpiece from the early 16th century showing scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary.
The entrance is located at Plaza de la Inmaculada in the town center. Guided visits can be arranged by calling +34 682 081 291 or +34 979 701 347.
The tower beside the nave was originally a military structure before being adapted into a bell tower. This combination of defensive architecture and religious function is still visible in its design today.
