Puente Mayor, Palencia

Puente Mayor is a stone bridge over the Carrión River in Palencia made from seven semicircular arches of carefully cut stone blocks. It connects the old city center with the Allende el Río neighborhood and carries both vehicle and foot traffic daily.

The bridge was built in the 16th century as the main crossing over the river and originally featured a central tower for defense. Major renovation work took place in the 19th century to reinforce and expand its structure.

The bridge has been a key stopping point for pilgrims walking the Road to Santiago de Compostela for centuries. Visitors still cross it today just as travelers did in the past, making it a living part of the pilgrimage route.

The bridge is accessible year-round for both vehicles and pedestrians with straightforward entry from the city center. Visitors can cross on foot or by car without difficulty at any time.

The bridge originally had a central tower that served as a defensive structure long ago. Though the tower is gone, the semicircular pillars beneath still hint at its role in protecting the crossing.
