Parque Huerta de Guadián, Public park in Palencia, Spain
Parque Huerta de Guadián is a public park in Palencia with walking paths winding through different types of trees and plants, where rest areas and recreational spaces sit alongside each other. At the park's center stands the 12th-century San Juan Bautista chapel with its distinctive Romanesque front.
The chapel was originally built in the village of Villanueva de Río Pisuerga, then taken apart stone by stone and rebuilt here during the 1960s. This move was a rescue effort to save the building as the village was disappearing.
The San Juan Bautista chapel within the grounds shows how rural Romanesque architecture was saved from a disappearing village. Visitors can see the carved stone details and medieval craftsmanship up close.
The park is accessible through the entrance at Paseo de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles 6, where parking is available and the paths are level. The flat pathways make it easy to walk around at any time of day.
The chapel's entrance displays seven decorated arches with geometric patterns that are quite rare for Romanesque art in northern Spain. These fine details are easy to miss if you do not look closely.
