Puente de Hierro, Palencia

Puente de Hierro is a steel bridge that spans the Carrión River and connects downtown Palencia with the Dos Aguas island, a hospital, and the road to Villamuriel. The structure uses a functional steel framework to join both sides of the city.

The bridge was built in 1911 to replace an earlier wooden crossing from 1874 that had fallen into disrepair. The city closed the aging structure in 1882 and needed a more permanent solution.

The bridge bears the name of Abilio Calderón, a local deputy who served as Director General of Public Works and facilitated its construction.

The bridge is easily reached on foot from downtown and provides direct access to destinations on the far bank. Visitors typically find good views of the river and surrounding landscape from the structure.

The ironwork for this bridge was manufactured at the Nervión Shipyards in the Basque Country before being assembled on site. This shows the specialized craftsmanship that went into its creation.
