Castle of Fuentes de Valdepero

The Castle of Fuentes de Valdepero is a fortress with three levels and a defensive tower at the top. The structure features vaulted ceilings, crenellations along the walls, and extremely thick stone barriers built for protection.

The fortress was built in the 15th century, replacing an older fortification from the 10th century. It was closely linked to the Sarmiento family and Count Pedro Ansúrez, who controlled the region during that time.

The structure reflects medieval Spanish military architecture in how it was built and organized. Its presence in the village tells us about the importance of defense and fortification in the region during that era.

The site can be reached on foot and is best explored by walking around its exterior. Visitors should plan time for the surroundings, as access to the interior may be limited.

The walls of this fortress are among the thickest of any Spanish fort from that period. This extreme thickness shows how seriously defense was taken in that era.
