Castillo

Castillo (Álora) stands on the summit of Cerro de las Torres, featuring three walled sections with six cube-shaped towers positioned throughout its fortified layout. The design reflects strategic defensive planning with multiple layers of walls protecting the structure.

The castle was built during the 9th century under Moorish rule from the Córdoban state. Modifications in the 10th century added two additional enclosures that expanded the original structure.

The castle grounds preserve traces of the Santa María de la Encarnación Church, which stood in place of an earlier mosque when Christian forces took control.

The site is currently undergoing restoration and archaeological work, which limits access to parts of the castle. Check current access conditions before visiting and wear sturdy footwear for the uneven terrain.

The castle's towers bear bullet holes from a French cavalry assault in 1823. These marks preserve traces of a violent clash that struck the fortification during regional conflicts.
