Pico Cabañas

Pico Cabañas is a limestone summit in the Sierra de Cazorla that reaches about 2,000 meters high, with steep slopes composed of rocky terrain throughout. From the top, the views extend across the surrounding mountain landscape and the valleys below.

The summit has served as a natural boundary marker since medieval times, separating distinct territories within the province of Jaen. Its elevated position made it valuable for observation and control of the surrounding lands.

Local shepherds maintain ancient pastoral traditions around Pico Cabañas, following seasonal routes that their ancestors established through these mountains centuries ago.

Hiking to the summit requires proper outdoor gear, plenty of water, and careful attention to weather conditions, as temperatures can shift noticeably between seasons. Check forecasts before starting and allow enough time for the ascent.

The rocks here contain marine fossils from an era when this area lay beneath an ancient sea. These remains tell the story of a very different world that once covered these mountains.
