Granada UNESCO Global Geopark, UNESCO Global Geopark in Province of Granada, Spain.

Granada UNESCO Global Geopark is a protected natural area in the Province of Granada, known for its badlands formations and fossil deposits from the Quaternary period. The territory covers several municipalities and offers marked trails that lead through some of its most striking geological sections.

Around five million years ago, rivers and lakes with no outlet to the sea shaped this land and left behind layers of sediment that are still visible today. Erosion gradually exposed those layers over time, carving out the badlands that now define much of the landscape.

Local communities here are deeply connected to the geological heritage and use the natural features for education and tourism. Visitors encounter people who protect their surroundings while maintaining their traditional relationship with the land.

The cooler months are the best time to walk the trails, as summer temperatures across the area can get very high. Some sections of the terrain are uneven, so sturdy footwear is a good idea before heading out.

This area was once part of a closed basin where rivers had no connection to the sea, which is why complete ancient ecosystems were preserved here rather than being washed away. That isolation created the conditions for the kind of fossil record rarely found elsewhere in southern Europe.
